MGT 8900/01, The Management of Innovation and Technology Development

Topics covered involve the process of managing technology development, its commercialization, and its diffusion in the marketplace, including leading the innovation process through research and development activities, managing the introduction and use of technology in products and services, in manufacturing processes, in marketing activities, and in other corporate or support functions. These disciplines also involve the development of science into technology and its further integration into new products, services, and process designs that can be effectively and efficiently produced and/or delivered. This course will examine critical issues faced by managers primarily in the private sector, but also faced by managers in the public sector. These issues will be addressed primarily through cases with a few supporting lectures. Students will be required to analyze a series of cases that highlight the critical issues and problems facing general and technology managers. The course will be split into these five primary topics: 1) Introduction to Technology and Innovation Management, 2) Technology Strategy, 3) Bringing New Technology to Market, 4) Managing Research and Development, and 5) Managing Product and Process Design. However, many of these topics will intersect and encompass other related topics such as technology forecasting and resource allocation. This course is an excellent complement to MKTG 8720 Strategic Product Management.  No Prerequisite.  Dr. Richard Franza, rfranza@kennesaw.edu
