Required Textbook: Englander, Irv The Architecture of Computer Hardware, Systems Software, and Networking: An Information Technology Approach, Fifth Edition. John Wiley and Sons, 2014; ISBN-13: 978-1-118-32263-5; electronic text: 978-1-118-80312-7. Note: Only the fifth edition will do for this class.
Software Requirements: You will need access to a computer running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, on which you can install software. Such computers are available in the open lab. You will also need a word processing program that can write files that can be opened with Microsoft Word 2010. One such program, available free, is Libre Office.
Description: Students learn about computers' hardware and software components and how they work together in a modern computing environment. Topics include an overview of computer organization and architecture, machine language, high-level languages and operating systems. Both written homework and hands-on projects will be required.
