Guiberson, Brenda Z. Mud City, A Flamingo Story. Henry Holt and Company, 2005. Unpaged. $16.95. ISBN 0-8050-7177-6. (Ages 5-10)

This fascinating story of flamingos and their life cycle is richly illustrated and full of details about these amazing birds that live in the Bahamas. A flamingo chick is swimming just four days after birth. At five weeks he filters out brine shrimp with his long, curved beak. Finally, he learns to fly and even escapes from wild pigs. Eventually he finds a mate to help him build a new nest in the mud near the mangrove trees…and the cycle continues.

Nelson, R. A. Teach Me. Penguin Young Readers, 2005. 264 pp. $16.99. ISBN 1-59514-084-0. (Romance and Relationships. Grades 10-up)

Carolina (“Nine”) Livingston is immediately attracted to her new senior English teacher, Mr. Mann. The attraction is mutual, and the two find themselves violating the boundaries of the student and teacher relationship. Nine’s feelings for Mr. Mann are powerful, and when he ends their affair, she finds herself out of control, unable to accept that their relationship is over.
Although I am immediately repelled by the subject matter of this book – sexual relationships between teachers and students – I was completely in awe of the way R.A. Nelson handled the characters and the situations. Nine’s feelings are so real; I felt the pain of the loss she had experienced as I read this book, even though the end of the affair is foreshadowed in the first two pages. I would, however, recommend this book to older readers who are able to handle the very adult situations contained in this story.
