Overview

For much of my career, I have combined academic teaching with a position in a government bureaucracy, and with volunteer work with social change, community or professional associations. I have won awards for my teaching and my organizational service. Even now, late in my career, I continue to be passionate about creating, to be fascinated in my lifelong learning with people and their social situations, and to be open to trying new approaches to teaching and academic programs. Several years ago, I wrote a fragment of an autobiography detailing my development as a Clinical Sociologist which is linked here.

I have been teaching for about forty years and continue to discover ways to improve what I do. I recently created a podcast of a paper on my educational philosophy that I wrote 25 years ago. That is still a useful introduction to how I teach. Podcast: Confessions of an Adult Educator. Students inform me that my courses are different from most at Kennesaw. My emphasis is more on interactive experiences. While there are a few quizzes, the bulk of the assignments require you to think, and write and understand the positions of others.

I am the lead planner for a potential online Masters' Degree Program in Sociological Administration.

I also continue to test online e-learning systems and explore online alternatives to classroom settings

More about me

My wife, Jo, and I just celebrated our 47th Wedding Anniversary. We are the proud parents of three adult sons and eight grandchildren. I recently celebrated my 50th anniversary of my graduation from Brooklyn Friends School. I graduated from Wesleyan University 50 years ago, and got my Masters and Doctorate from Brandeis University. I have taught at Syracuse University (social work, sociology, rehabilitation, counseling), Health Science Center at Syracuse (medical students and psychiatrists), New School University (ethics to health services administrators) and was an adjunct mentor at SUNY-Empire State College. I co-designed and coordinated a Graduate Certificate Program in Professional Sociological Practice for the Fielding Graduate Institute.

I was Director of Education and Training at Hutchings Psychiatric Center for twenty-two years. After I took early retirement from this NY State facility, I moved to Atlanta and became a management consultant and trainer for large corporations. Then in Fall 2003 I joined the Kennesaw faculty part-time. I became full-time starting in the Spring of 2004. My hobbies are photography, movie-making, the Macintosh computer and trying to innovate.
