This paper is important in the field of pectus excavatum repair, as it demonstrates a successful and safe minimally invasive method for repair of this defect.  I directed data collection and analysis for this study, the results of which we used in designing the ongoing multi-center study of the physiologic impact of repair of pectus excavatum.

This study was the first to demonstrate the usefulness of ibuprofen suspension for treatment of pediatric migraine in boys but not girls.  The use of epidemiologic techniques in designing and analyzing this study was particularly important, as the significant interaction between efficacy and gender would have otherwise been missed.  My major contribution to this study was in directing the analysis staff.

These two papers (6 and 7) have been hailed as an important advance in the design of contraceptive efficacy studies, and were featured with commentary in the American Journal of Epidemiology.  My paper was also digested in International Family Planning Perspectives, which is a journal focused on education of providers in developing countries.  The design of this study was replicated in CDC studies with male condoms and USAID studies in developing countries.  I had a major role in the design of this study, developed the protocols, implemented and supervised data collection, analyzed the results, and initially drafted both papers.

This paper highlights my interest in research methods and developing valid measurement tools.  We developed this tool to measure quality of life as it related to the physical impairment and disfigurement resulting from pectus excavatum in children.  Although this was a pilot study conducted primarily to validate the tool, the impact of surgery was so positive that we had enough sample size to detect a significant improvement in post-operative quality of life.  This was one of the first studies to demonstrate a measurable positive impact of surgical repair of pectus excavatum using minimally invasive technique and was the subject of a Reuters report.
