Some of my favorite World Wide Web hangouts

Kamat's Potpourri This is the homepage of a family of four Web enthusiasts. Absolutely the finest site about the "history, mystery and diversity of India" that I have found on the Web. I give it a two thumbs up!

Kashmir Roulette! Despite energetic propaganda by secessionist groups and the Pakistan Government about India's "excesses" in Kashmir, the fact is that most civilian deaths in the Kashmir Valley, and the brutal attacks against minorities, have been inflicted not by the Indian Army or Indian police, but by fanatical Pakistan-armed Islamic terrorists in the garb of "jihad".  Visit this site for the details!

Jana Gana Mana  Click here to listen to India's National Anthem. (Choose "Open this file from its current location" and click OK)

News of the Weird If you need proof that true stories are stranger than made-up stories, click on this link.  It is w-e-i-r-d!

Lingua-tonic:  A Word A Day This amazing website run by Anu Garg, an Indian-American based in Columbus, Ohio, popularises little known words of the English language.  It is user-friendly and captivating, almost soul-stirring.  Visit it for sure -- and if you wish, sign up to receive Garg's daily lingua-tonic in your mailbox.

Smash Hits My music station on the Internet.  Has a fine collection of my favorite old Kannada songs, Carnatic classical music and quick-loading Hindi movie videos.

Star of Mysore This is the virtual home of Mysore's popular evening newspaper, Star of Mysore.  Quirky, perfunctory and a little crazy. Runs columns with names like 'Abracadabra' and 'Hocus-Pocus', but very interesting!  For me, it helps me connect with the daily happenings in my hometown.

Beyond 2000 This is an amazing website that portrays future thought through current events.  It is eyeballs-friendly, intriguing and fun; contains a ton of scientific stories that are tempered with the layman's logic-perception and angled to predict the future.  As v-i-r-t-u-a-l as the attitude of our generation.  Check it out!

Lovely Coorg!
Visit Coorg, a picturesque hill district in southern India. Famous for its coffee, cardamom, oranges and pepper, Coorg (also called Kodagu) is the home of a robust people who traditionally serve India's armed forces and play field hockey. Coorg's cultural traditions are thriving, though at 0.15 million the Kodavas themselves are among India's smallest defined communities.

Heritage Ahoy! This link takes you to India's World Heritage Sites.  It is a fascinating display of the 22 must-visits for those inclined towards art and anthropology, especially those who recognize the Indian sub-continent as a cradle of ancient civilizations.

Why Meat Stinks  Visit PETA's crusading website for the Truth. Chances are, you'll feel too guilty to catch your forty winks this afternoon.  PETA fights for animals the world over.

Library of Congress   The homepage of the Library of Congress:  My virtual reference center!

Web Usability and You  I am fascinated by Jakob Nielson's site on Web usability after browsing it for my JComm 659 class readings

CNN  This is my favorite U.S. news portal.  CNN's quicksilver presentations never leave me dissatisfied.

Rediff  Rediff is India's best known horizontal portal; keeps me in touch with news and cultural events back home!

The Onion  This is by far the best parody I see on the Net. These guys spoof, caricature, rib, ridicule, mock and lampoon contemporary events and personalities, sparing no one and with no apologies.  I find their brand of burlesque hilarious.

Islam and Vegetarianism  "Muslim and vegetarian?  Nah!" used to be my misconception till I stumbled onto this site, which details how Islam and vegetarianism are compatible.  It makes for very interesting browsing.

Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission   This website has links to various centers of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, an Indian monastic order that strives for spiritual upliftment of mankind through the teachings, idealism and work ethic of the Vedanta, Sri Ramakrishna, his consort Sharada Devi, and of Swami Vivekananda.  My sister, Shylaja Moro, is a nun with this order's women's wing, Sharada Math.

The Holocaust Relived  The U.S. military film footage and other material on the Holocaust presented here is comprehensive, thought-provoking  -  and fascinating.  This site is dedicated to the 6 million Jews murdered by the Nazis before and during the turbulent years of World War II.

Tehelka!  Tehelka, which in Hindi means "sensation", is unmatched for in-depth coverage of India-related issues.  This portal rocketed to fame first with a sting against corruption in cricket tournaments, and then again with a expose of greedy politicians and generals in India's defence set-up.  Tehelka is also a forum for some of India's finest  writers; their literary review section is especially noteworthy.

The Spark  A satirical online magazine. Includes a Death Test, a Purity Test, an IQ test and more.

Gooooooogle!  I find this the fastest and most accurate search engine to explore the Web.  Gives the best results - every time!

Mahatma Gandhi  This is an interesting website on the Father of the Indian Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, architect of the sub-continent's Independence and saint to millions, whose practiced ideals of non-violence, peace, prayer and self-sufficiency are being re-discovered in today's wired world.  The site has recently attracted $1 million as seed money from three Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, B.V. Jagdeesh, Kanwal Rekhi and K.B. Chandrasekhar.

Brittanica Encyclopedia  This is one of the finest encyclopaedia sites one can visit on the Web.

Dictionary-Thesaurus  The Merriam-Webster online dictionary/thesaurus is my online writing and editing companion.
