Multiple Literacies in Schools and Communities

What do we know, or think we know about literacy? This course helps students develop a foundation for the multiple, often competing, conceptions of literacy that can either foster or impede learning in the classroom. Literacy practices in homes, schools, and the larger community/society will be observed and interpreted with an emphasis on their implications for effective teaching. The way that an individual student's literacy practices may be shaped by gender, social class, and ethnicity will be considered.
