Documentary on Campus: "Mardi Gras: Made in China"
 Received on 3 october 2005
.

Tuesday, October 04 "Mardi Gras: Made in China" (Film) 6:30 pm KSU Carmichael Student Center, University Rooms B, C, D & E.

Mardi Gras: Made in China follows the "bead trail" from the factory in China to Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras, poignantly exposing the inequities of globalization. First-time director David Redmon cleverly illuminates the clash of cultures by juxtaposing American excess and consumer ignorance against the harsh life of the Chinese factory worker. The film confronts both cultural and economic globalism by humanizing the commodity chain from China to the United States.

 Free Depression Screening
 Received on 3 October 2005
.

On Thursday, October 6 from 10:00 to 3:00 the CAPS Center will be providing free screenings for depression and anxiety in conjunction with the National Depression Screening Day (NDSD) program. Come to the CAPS Center to participate in the screening and speak with a CAPS Counselor.

You can also visit tables in the Student Center, Kennesaw Hall and the Center for Health Promotion and Wellness and receive information on how to help yourself or a loved one.

As part of the program, CAPS will also be offering a workshop on Resiliency, at 12:30 on October 6 in KH 1302. This workshop will address what the research indicates are the characteristics of individuals that are able to rise above and recover from tragedy and loss. We particularly invite those who have been affected by the devastation of hurricane Katrina and Rita to attend. Traumatic experiences can often trigger depressive and anxiety symptoms. Also for those of you who have been helping with the relief efforts, you may be experiencing symptoms of chronic stress. Dorothy Morgan, LPC will offer information on how to meet these challenges.

Contact the CAPS Center at 770-423-6600 for more information on NDSD.

To find a screening site near you, go to the Screening for Mental Health website at www.mentalhealthscreening.org.

 Get Involved: Tour de KSU!
 Received on 12 September 2005
.

Now is your chance to get involved in the Tour de KSU!

As most of you are probably aware, this bike ride is scheduled for Friday, 28 October, from 9:30 a.m. through 2:30 p.m. The event will include a bicycle and Poker ride, as well as a post-event party with door prizes and raffle.

We are in need of volunteers to assist in the various aspects of the Tour, both during the planning stages and on event day. If you are interested in becoming involved or in getting your KSU 1101 class involved, please look over the attached table. The table includes 22 different aspects of the race that need to be completed prior to or on event day. I have listed a coordinator for each aspect - the intent is that the coordinator will take charge of that aspect and report back to me on the progress, concerns, and needs that he/she has in preparing for the Tour. If you or your class want to coordinate an aspect of the event, please note that I still need coordinators for Stage Stops 2 (#14) and 3 (#15), and for the raffle (#9). I have also listed "partners" that the coordinator should be working with to ensure there is no duplication of effort etc. If you would like to partner with a coordinator (i.e., assist in an aspect of the event), please contact the coordinator of that item, then inform me of that you have agreed to a partnership.

If you are a coordinator, please do you best to include student volunteers to the fullest extent possible. (You might want to divide your efforts into (1) pre-Tour organizational/preparation activities and (2) Tour-day activities to better make use of the volunteers at your disposal.)

NOTE: (1) I will be registering this event with VKSU so students can register with VKSU to record their volunteer credit hours. (2) Italicized coordinators/partners indicate assignments that are as yet unconfirmed.

 Free Clinic: Clean Computer Viruses
 Received on 6 September 2005
.

Merle King, department chair for CSIS, would appreciate our assistance in getting the following information to our CLASS students:

At the beginning of each semester, the student chapter of the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA), hosts a free clinic in the lobby of Clendenin, to assist students in cleaning the viruses off of their personal computers and laptops and installing and configuring software to prevent future infections. There is no charge for this service or the software. Each semester we struggle with the onslaught of viruses on our nets, brought in by new and returning students.

Attention!  Defective Dell Laptop AC Adapters
 Received on 14 October 2004
.
To all KSU Dell Latitude and Inspiron users,

Dell has recalled 990,000 AC Adapters for Latitude and Inspiron
laptop models purchased from 1998 through 2002 because "they
may overheat and pose fire risk and electrocution hazard."

Dell will replace your AC Adapter if it is identified as being one of those in question.

Please take a moment to go through the following steps:
1)  Look on the bottom of your AC Adapter for any one of the following numbers:
     P/N9364U
     P/N7832D
     P/N4983D

If you need help locating this number, visit Dell's site for a visual of the AC Adapter
     label: http://www.delladapterprogram.com/multiorder.aspx

2)  If your adapter has one of those numbers, then
     a) immediately discontinue using the AC Adapter (per Dell); and
     b) Send an e-mail to the KSU Service Desk at  service@kennesaw.edu.
Be sure to specify your laptop's tag# (Silver KSU Property Tag
and Yellow/Green bar-coded tag) and the AC Adapter problem.
An ITS Technician will contact you about your ticket and
will call Dell to get your replacement AC Adapter.

NOTE:  Your recalled AC Adapter must be given to the ITS Service
Tech so they can send it back to Dell to receive your
             replacement.

3)  For additional information, visit www.delladapterprogram.com.  Since the
release of Dell's recall notification, this site has been deluged with hits
and may be temporarily down.  If this is the case, please check the link later.

 Music File Sharing on Campus
 Received on 11 July 2003
.
Recently there has been an increase in the use of file sharing software on campus.  These are mostly music sharing programs that are Napster successors (Kazaa, Morpheus etc).   When you install these types of programs they frequently install servers resulting in a large use of network bandwidth.  This kind of activity can slow network access for everyone on campus.  Kennesaw State University policy does not allow such "bandwidth hogging".

The Digital Millennium Copyright Law makes this type of copying illegal, and the RIAA has recently made examples of several students in the U.S., with very significant fines involved.  External sources scanning for music sharing violations consider universities a prime target.  Since KSU carries contributory liability for individual infringement, and since we have policy preventing the use of file sharing software, we cannot allow this type of computing activity.  Although infringers may have little concern for the large record companies, they can be assured of communications with me.

John L. Isenhour, Ph.D.
Director of Information Technology Services

 Regents' Test Policy Revision
 Received on 23 April 2003
.
The following paragraph has been approved for addition to the Policy Manual, Section 307, Regents’ Testing Program:

Scores on other standardized tests as specified by the Senior Vice Chancellor for Academics and Fiscal Affairs may be used to fulfill Regents’ Test requirements.  Such scores must be from a national test administration and must indicate a very high probability (at least .95) of passing the Regents’ Test.  Tests used to fulfill the essay requirement must include an externally-graded  writing sample.

The revision will go into effect in summer semester, 2003 for students graduating in summer semester, 2003 or later.

Administrative Procedures
Students with SAT- I Verbal scores of at least 510 or ACT Reading scores of at least 23 will be considered to have fulfilled the reading comprehension requirement of the Regents' Test and do not need to take the reading portion of the Regents’ Test.  Scores must be from a national administration of the SAT or ACT.  (Scores from institutional SAT or residual ACT tests will not be acceptable for this purpose.)  Students must be reported on SIRS (S415B) as having met the Regents' Test reading requirement through scores on the SAT or ACT.

Students with College Board Advanced Placement (AP) English scores of at least 3, International Baccalaureate (IB) higher-level English scores of at least 4, or SAT II English Writing scores of at least 650 will be considered as having fulfilled the essay requirement of the Regents' Test and do not need to take the essay portion of the Regents’ Test.  (There is no implication that such students should be given any course credit or exemption in English.  This remains an institutional matter.)  Students must be reported on SIRS (S415A) as having met the Regents' Test essay requirement through AP, IB, or SAT II scores.

Other tests will be considered as data become available.  Tests to be considered must indicate a very high probability (at least .95) of passing the Regents’ Test and, for the essay portion, must contain a substantial writing component evaluated externally.

 KSU Catholic Center is Open
 Received on 20 November 2002
.
Hello KSU Community,

I wanted to send a brief update regarding activities available at the Kennesaw State University Catholic Center which is located at 3487 Frey Lake Road, near University Place and next to the Lutheran Church.

The Catholic Center is open Monday through Thursday 10:00-4:00.

Mass is celebrated Monday through Thursday at 12:30; lunch usually follows.

Confessions are available by appointment, and there is a small adoration chapel for those who wish to have private prayer or meditation in the presence of the Sacrament.  The center also has a small Catholic library.

I hope this information is particularly helpful to Catholic faculty and staff, but I also want to stress that members of all faiths are welcome at the Catholic Center, which strives to be ecumenical and inclusive in its programming.

Faculty Advisor to the Catholic Student Union

New Criminal Justice Degree at KSU
 Received on 14 January 2002
.
I am delighted to announce that our B.S. in Criminal Justice was approved at last week's Board of Regents meeting. The Board approved the program with few questions and commented yet again on the quality of program proposals that are submitted by KSU. Special thanks go to Dr. Lana Wachniak and the faculty in the Department of Sociology, Geography, and Anthropology (home to the C.J. program) for putting together yet another innovative and growth-oriented program. We also appreciate the support of Dr. Rugg and Dr. Siegel in helping us make this program a reality. A brief description of the program follows.

NEW B.S. IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE:
KSU is dedicated to serving as a resource for the educational, economic, and social advancement of its community. It aims to assist the citizens and the public and private institutions of northwest Georgia and the greater metropolitan Atlanta area to continue their progress as part of the South's premier social and commercial region.  One of the major aims of KSU is to prepare its students to be part of a dynamic workforce.   The new major in Criminal Justice focuses on the rapidly changing needs of a population entering a new century.

The Criminal Justice system is an institution that is at the crux of societal concern.  When individuals are asked to define major social problems, the fear of and response to crime are found at the top of the list.  People not only want to have a better understanding of these problems; many also want to become a part of the solution.  It is these individuals who will be the primary beneficiaries of a Criminal Justice major at KSU.  The secondary beneficiaries are members of the community; university educated criminal justice personnel make better criminal justice practitioners.  This program of study is timely and relevant.  It infuses knowledge about interpersonal communication skills, multicultural issues, leadership and management concerns, moral and ethical considerations, and technological applications into the coursework.

The program is appropriate for pre-service as well as in-service students.  Following a core of required courses. The student selects one of three major concentrations:
· Criminal Justice Administration
· Forensic Behavioral Sciences
· Technology and Crime

Questions regarding the program should be directed to Dr. Lana Wachniak, Chair, Department of Sociology, Geography, & Anthropology (lwachnia@kennesaw.edu)

Dear Campus Community:

I am sure that most people are in shock and disbelief over the events that have occurred yesterday [September 11, 2001], and are in fear over what might happen next.  This situation is something that many of us have never faced before, and it is expected that many will feel angry and experience increased anxiety.

If any of you are feeling unable to cope, there are several steps you can take.  In the CAPS Center there are licensed mental health professionals available to assist.  There are also low cost community resources such as Families First (404-853-2800) and Cobb County Mental Health (770) 422-0202.

For more information, contact Dr. Rhonda Perry in the CAPS Center at X6600.

We all need to pull together during this challenging time.  The CAPS Center is here to help.

 KSU Smoking Policy
 Received on 20 August 2001
.
FROM: Gerald C. Donaldson, Director of EHS

The no-smoking policy, which went into effect on August 18, 2001, prohibits smoking in all university buildings. The only exceptions to this are the areas located by the Student Center with the designated smoking signage. The aim is to create and maintain an environment that sustains and enhances the general health of the faculty, staff, students and visitors.

Implementation

· Appropriate signs are posted at all entrances throughout the campus and the KSU Center.  No smoking is allowed beyond those points.

· A copy of the policy is available to all faculty, staff and students (http://WWW.Kennesaw.EDU/ehs/smoke.htm).

· Positive assistance is available through the KSU Wellness Center for faculty, staff and students who wish to stop smoking.

Periodic reviews of the smoking policy will continue and revisions to this policy may be necessary. For information or clarification regarding this policy please contact Gerald Donaldson, Director of EHS at 3321 or e-mail: gdonalds@kennesaw.edu. Thanks...
